Risks Down Under

The Industrial Foundation for Accident Prevention (IFAP) staged its annual Safety Leadership seminars in Perth, Western Australia in June 2001. Delegates from a range of industries, including mining, oil & gas and manufacturing, heard this year's invited speaker Alan Waring from the UK deliver papers on:

'Business Risks, Corporate Governance and Safety'
'Safety Management Systems'
'The Future of the Health & Safety Professional'

It was evident that Australia shares with the UK many current risk management topics and issues such as:

  • Grappling with complexities of 'management systems' and 'culture'

  • Corporate accountability for health & safety generally and workplace deaths in particular.

  • Boardroom ignorance about scope and depth of health & safety management requirements.

  • Weak qualifications of many health & safety personnel.
