Driving and traffic management on a UK employer's premises are covered
by the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and
this includes suitable and sufficient risk assessments and effective risk
reduction and control. For some time, the UK Health & Safety Commission
has been considering extending these requirements to include off-site
driving. This could include, for example, company car drivers as well
as drivers of goods vehicles. There has been considerable debate about
benefits, costs and potential problems. However, many large employers
already carry out fleet risk management programmes, including risk assessments
and safe driving courses, as part of good management and to obtain insurance
benefits. AWA supports this stance.
