Stress Management Update

In the UK, the Health & Safety Executive has launched (16 June 2003) a major programme to help employers prevent, reduce and control work-related stress, which they report loses UK employers up to 13.4 million days’ production per annum. (See previous Hot Topics entries).

The emphasis is on practical and innovative ways that employers can adopt to prevent, reduce and control stress. A pilot involving 24 companies is currently underway and positive results so far are likely to result in the scheme being made available to others. A guide for employers entitled Management Standards for Stress is also available from www.hse.gov.uk/stress. The guide covers key topics such as:

  • Developing a business case
  • Gaining employee and trade union buy-in
  • Identifying and targeting the key issues within your organisation
  • Reviewing progress and success.
